In all my 23 years of teaching, I have never come across any way to get the kids to want to learn their facts like they do using the Flashmaster.

I have 6 kids (4th graders) in my room who can, with ease, pass level 9 dividing, 1 second with 100% every time! You should see their fingers fly! It's absolutely amazing. My students used 2 of them today in class (for the first time ever) to practice their math facts (add., subtr., multi. and div) and they loved them!  It beats the heck out of the standard drill and kill with flashcards.  It’s a calculator-looking device that lets students practice facts by table, or mixed, timed or not ... it also records the missed problems and lets students just practice those.  It spices things up a bit and throws in some technology.

Whenever the girls have a free minute in Math, or even at recess, they pull out a Flashmaster to practice their facts! ...With LOTS of practice, we have had 3 girls who were able to complete 50 multiplication flashcards in 1 sec. each with 90% or greater accuracy! Actually, I tried … myself and couldn't do it, but what [the 3 girls] have found is that it's really about practice and persistence. If they start at a slower time, they're usually able to build up to 1 sec. after repeated practice. They develop those "Flashmaster muscles" -- and then they're able to repeat their scores numerous times!

I just wanted to share our exciting news with you.  I have a fourth grade student who has worked hard all year to master the timed flashcards function (Level 7).  Today she got a 90% accuracy score at 1.0 seconds!  We are pretty excited!

I have another student that I expect to meet the same level of mastery.  She has been working since the beginning of the year and her improvement has been tremendous.  For her, especially, the FlashMaster has been a great tool.  It has never come easy to her, but she is here during her recess everyday giving her all.  She is working at 1.6 seconds, Level 7 right now.

I took your challenge as well.  It has been a tough task to train these old fingers of mine to move fast enough to answer 1 second!  I can do it – sometimes!  It makes me that much more proud of my students!

The multiplication fury continues in my classroom everyday at recess.  The other student I mentioned to you is trying her best to pass the 1.0 marker.  She passed 1.3 seconds earlier this week.  I can't tell you what an accomplishment this is for her.  Thank you for giving her something to work towards.  She is a determined young lady.  I'll keep you updated on her progress.

I continue to have more and more successes with those mini-magic machines.  You should read my comments to parents, telling them of their children's improvements that I can trace directly to the use of the FlashMaster.  They're still excited about them, and they still have raging battles for supremacy – it's good to note, though, that the competition that results from FM use is always good natured.  It's quite an interesting phenomenon.

Several of our students had the opportunity to preview the Flashmaster prior to our spring break.  As you might have expected, they showed an intuitive grasp of the device.  They were delighted with the ease with which they navigated through the options.  Of course, they elected to try out the FlashMaster with the math problems that they had relative confidence in!  I'm convinced that the kids will show the confidence to use the Flashmaster to help bolster their relatively weak math facts!

As a former teacher turned private tutor (and nonprofit director), I can tell you with all sincerity that I think you've developed an amazing product. My tutoring business serves primarily individuals experiencing difficulty concentrating, paying attention, and/or learning to read, but many of the activities in our program incorporate using some of the basic math skills. I can think of several of my former clients who would greatly benefit from using Flashmaster, some of whom I will see after Spring Break for a few weeks of "brush up." I would be delighted to let them try out my Flashmaster and to direct them to your website. I don't know if you specifically remember me.....a professor of teacher ed.....moving to a new univ. in Illinois....and homeschooling three daughters...grades 3, 5, and 7. The flashmaster has been an overwhelming hit at home with the third grader and the 7th grader. My 5th grader is into movement and does most math in her head....But the other two have been on the flashmaster 3 to 4 times a week. What is great is the adaptability to each individual level. My husband finishes instruction with one and then they go do flashmaster independently at a specified level while he takes another for instruction.....Versatility and independence....those are the keys for making the flashmaster successful.

I can honestly say the Flashmaster really works. I haven't used it in my classroom of 2nd graders yet, but am anxious to do so in the fall. Where I have seen the results is with my own son. He just finished 3rd grade. He was struggling with his multiplication facts until we brought the Flashmaster home from the conference. He started using it, and loved it. His ability and scores went up immediately. What's better is he pulled it out again the other day, after being out of school for a month, and his scores were still high, and he was able and wanting to brush up on the facts he was having difficulty with. He recently took the Flashmaster to a family reunion and he and his cousin (same age) were having contests with it. They look at the Flashmaster as a new kind of game. It's great.

I'm pleased to say that virtually every child that has used it has been interested, challenged, and happy with the results. I've taken it home, where my two sons, eight and four years old, have played with it. I did as you had suggested and simply explored the features first, actually for quite some time. I then read the information and found that I had discovered most of the features. I used the same approach with students; letting them explore, then checking in with them to see what they'd figured out. I think that your device does just what you'd hoped: it provides a simple, effective way for students to practice and learn important math facts. My four-year old son is learning his numbers and was able to work through the ones table (to his delight), and continued to explore and play with the device for some time. I also sent the FlashMaster home during spring break with one of my students in the fifth grade that is experiencing some difficulty with math facts. It was such a success that I had trouble getting it back! I've been recommending your device to other teachers and feel that it would be a worthy investment for any classroom.

L… passed the Flashmaster on to me to use with my students. They loved it! I approached a few of my students from the perspective that I didn't know how to work the Flashmaster. They grabbed it and began trying to figure out its workings. The rest of my students became interested and wanted to participate. After one student figured out how to work the Flashmaster it was passed to the next awaiting student. Once all students knew how to work the Flashmaster, they argued as to who would be the first official "user". I had them take turns with a partner towards the end of the hour for a week. Once each student had used the Flashmaster we discussed its use and how they would benefit from it. They were very honest. They realized how weak their basic math skills were and how the Flashmaster would help to improve them. One student even admitted that she had memorized a few multiplication facts in the few times she had used the Flashmaster already! My students enjoyed working with the Flashmaster with the limited amount of time we had left in the semester. I will be incorporating it into my daily activities next year.

I have to tell you that the head of special ed in our school came by last week to ask how she could order flashmasters. She is very excited about using them for several reasons including the ability to measure a child's progress.

I hope she orders many. We are a very small school but judging from 7th graders, we need a lot of help with helping the kids learn their math facts.

I have been using them in class successfully. The kids compete against each other. I have been thinking about having them compete against me for fun. They are so quick with computer game fingering that they may beat me which would be fun.

I teach a 7th grade math class and there are several students in the class that don't have their math facts down yet and I thought the Flashmaster could be very helpful for them.

My 20 students have all tried the Flashmaster. I asked them to see if it was easy to use without reading directions and what they thought about it. They wrote notes which I will transcribe for you. The overall consensus was that it was "fun." Students have asked to use it when they finish their homework - I thought that was a good sign!

I am a mentor teacher to about 30 middle school teachers. Most of the[m] have problems with basic facts. I had the opportunity to see one from a teacher that had attended the National Math Conference. No one in our district has the Flashmaster, but the teachers who brought it are really excited about it. I too really like it and would like to show it off.

I found the FlashMaster a very useful tool to help students practice their math facts. It is easy to use. I like how you have the various levels on the back for quick reference. I could see a teacher having several of them for her students instead of using worksheets. … Parents pay anywhere from $20-$69 for a math program for their computers. These are usually in game format and kids love them. This, on the other hand, is portable, and to the point. In my experience, kids enjoy practicing their facts. They would enjoy using this tool very much - far better than doing a ditto!!! I will be demonstrating it to a group of teachers who represent each of the 10 elementary schools in our district.

I am very happy with the FlashMasters.  … I am using them in my class and continuing to collect data for my article.  Two years ago I conducted an action research project on improving children's mathematical abilities.  I have data that I collected from that project and I want to compare the progress of children who use the FlashMaster in addition to the other teaching techniques I use.  I see a huge improvement in X., who scored a 4% on the SAT last April.  That's about as low as you can get, since 50% is average and the 4% was probably earned just by random chance guessing.  Already X. has passed Test 1 (a 2 minute test of 30 addition facts with sums to 10).  This may seem like a modest accomplishment, but in September X. took 2 minutes to add 3 or 4 problems.  X picks up a FlashMaster every chance he gets.  As soon as I collect more compelling data, I will publish and compare the two classes.  I have also shown the FlashMaster around to my colleagues.  I can share my grant and encourage other teachers to apply for one for FlashMasters next May.

I have told several of my parents about the FlashMaster and have recommended it to the 7 older children (5th graders) who meet in my room for FCAT Test camp after school with the guidance counselor.  …  The fifth graders were entranced when I let them use the FlashMasters until the guidance counselor arrived.

Dr. Mel Levine writes in his new book about how important automaticity with arithmetic tables is for future success in math. He suggests that parents need to take the lead in getting their children to drill and practice, with suggestions from school. With Mel Levine in mind I recommend to students/parents that they: make tables & charts; practice skip counting (counting by multiples); say the problem and answer aloud; write the problem and answer on paper; use a calculator. I think the FlashMaster is going to supercede all of these techniques in terms of appeal to students and efficacy.

I wanted to know what the Pause button did (why it didn't work when I pressed it) and went looking for an index at the back of the Guide and a table of contents in the front. I found a picture of the FM instead with all the buttons on the device page-referenced. Even better!

It's great!!!  I only recently began using it with the students receiving academic intervention services.  The few students who have tried it thoroughly enjoyed it.  The most difficult part was getting them to put it down!  I've recommended it to both colleagues and friends.

The FlashMaster is a useful tool.  It has produced results on some of the most difficult students that I've known in my 2+ years at [national tutoring franchise].  The "Timed Practice" feature is especially useful; it repeats the problems that the student got wrong, pounding it in until they get it.  Most students prefer using it instead of other mediums, and it saves on pens/pencils and paper.

My [second grade] students in 2003-4 ranged from low to average in math abilities. Eleven of the 16 children who took the SAT-9 in first grade scored below 40%. The average score for the class was 32%. The students used the FlashMasters enthusiastically throughout the day as they completed assignments and during center times. Did the FlashMasters improve their mathematical abilities? The scores for the 16 students rose from 517 to 751 and climbed to an average of 47%, an increase of fifteen percentage points.

The majority of students in the classes selected would have difficulty with tables: a necessary core skill in Maths and their confidence in the subject are greatly affected as a result...Accordingly all the teachers were eager to get involved in this initiative. The students were equally enthusiastic and excited when they laid eyes on these devices. They thought they were 'cool' and were very receptive to using them.

With the Flashmasters the students were able to work independently on different levels and at their own speed. Consequently all students were able to experience success. The potential of these devices was seen predominantly while observing one student. This particular young man has learning difficulty; he’s rebellious, poorly motivated and would find tables especially challenging. He really enjoyed using the Flashmaster and was absolutely thrilled when he got 100% in a test, he proudly told the others in the class and the students were surprisingly very supportive, largely due possibly to the non-competitive nature of this initiative. Overall the students really enjoyed the initiative and ask regularly to use them.

Undoubtedly I will be using the FlashMasters in the future with all the Junior cycle classes. It is heartening to finally have a post primary method of developing a skill which was inaccessible previously. [teacher in Irish special-education/remediation program]

Students used the Flashmaster for 20 minutes of class every Friday, and recorded their speed/accuracy in their maths copy books. We had enough machines to give each student use of their own. All found it entertaining and challenging, and very quickly worked out how Flashmaster, with all of its functions worked ... Results were 'private' to themselves and myself so they therefore felt encouraged to try the next level up. I used the Flashmaster for two months, 15 minutes a class. All the students found the Flashmaster easy to use, and enjoyed working with them. They recorded their results in their copies. I found the arithmetic practice greatly improved their maths ability in class and gave them much more confidence in maths. It’s electronic flashcards. When used consistently (a minimum of 3 days a week, 10-15 minutes a session) with a record sheet to keep track of progress it can be quite effective. Daily use for 10 minutes is ideal... We now have about 250 Flashmasters (we’re a K-8 school of about 1700 students) and teachers as well as students love them. We’ve also had parents buy them for use at home.

As an elementary educator for nearly 13 years, I was thrilled to learn about FlashMaster! My nephews used the tools in their school... and I was immediately interested in trying it with my own children. Bought one 2 years ago for friends and they love it!

My boss bought it and his kids love it. 

We just added 10 minutes of drill on the Flashmaster each day and it did wonders. We did homemade flashcards for months with no result. Audiomemory multiplication songs, and wipe-off multiplication placemats didn't stick either. We tried Timestales, which was great, but nothing clicked for my son until Flashmaster. 

We have just opened the box and now my 12 year old and my 5 year old are nearly coming to blows over …… THE FLASHMASTER!!!  Needless to say, I am pleased.  While one child enjoys numbers …. my other despised Math until we started Chalkdust last year.  I still did not expect him to be too excited about this little device – but there they are, arguing over! … My husband and I are getting a chuckle out of the kids being so excited about this.  I am sure it is going to get a lot of use here and prove very helpful.  If you are considering it, I can recommend it heartily based on my current limited experience. 

Well my son is done mowing the lawn and I just "caught" him sitting there with it again.  If you knew my kids, you would know that is amazing.  … Math has always been his least favorite subject, yet there he sits, drilling himself! … I am finding this quite funny! 

[W]hat I like is that it saves ME from either making lots of flash cards or sitting there doing it out loud. My DD especially likes that she can do it independently, my DS would much rather be attached to me and having me do it with him …. However, DS starts being a goof with me helping, Flashmaster takes the audience away so he just works at it.

We love our FlashMaster! Let me rephrase that… I am loving it… We use Horizon Math 3 and every day when it says, “Review all the subtraction facts using flash cards” and then “drill the 3s and 5s tables of the multiplication using flash cards,” there’s no more shuffling around trying to find the appropriate cards! Click, click, click… hand it to my kids. “Here do this. Then give it back and let me reset it for the next drill.” I don’t have to hold the cards up and don’t have to remind them what the correct answer is for the facts they don’t know. And I can check their scores to see how they’re doing!

I purchased the FlashMaster after attending the 2005 FPEA convention. (Pretty much as an afterthought while I struggled with the price!) Now I know that it is totally worth every cent! My daughter LOVES the challenge it presents, and we have all but thrown away the old flashcards. I LOVE how it remembers her missed problems, and how we can determine how the problem is presented (ex: ? + 3 = 7 or 4 + 3 = ?). I even recommend it to the high school algebra students that I tutor, finding that their biggest problem is not knowing their basic facts. Thank you for a wonderful product!! Can I plug the Flashmaster yet again? Admittedly, it costs much, much more than a pack of flashcards, but I’m really impressed with how useful it has been… On flashcard mode you can set it for a certain number of seconds per fact. It records the facts you get wrong (and in flashcard mode, that means the ones that you can’t answer in the set number of seconds) and you can use special problems mode to review the ones that you get wrong and focus just on those that they are slower on. I love that it does this all without me sitting there timing her and holding the cards, so it is convenient to use in the car and in little bites of time here and there.

A couple of years ago, a friend told me about a handheld computer called the FlashMaster. It is wonderful! My son is one of those children that can take or leave video games, so he isn't the type to pick it up by himself. But we have used it almost every day this summer to practice his multiplication and division... It is great! It is the best money we ever spent. It doesn't use much battery power, goes anywhere (even camping and on vacation this summer) and will be used by my daughter this year who is going into 1st grade to practice adding and subtracting!

I love FlashMaster. It's easy to use, to take along on the van, to focus on any difficult problems, to gently introduce new facts and easy to assign! I was leary about buying a “fancy flashcard system”. The $ was well worth it for us. My daughter has made great progress with her math facts, just using it 5 minutes per day. I put in special problems for her. She first does the special problems and then any other problems she wishes to do. I have recently purchased 2 Flashmasters for my 2 children. One is in the second grade and is far too busy for math facts practice. The other is in third grade and loves anything that is like a handheld toy. Both children have been using the Flashmaster for the 10 minute ride to school and the ride home as well. (It makes car trips quiet and productive although impossible to have conversations with them...) ... I can tell you that studying for the weekly facts quizzes is no longer stressful.

I purchased two flashmasters in early January and in a week my 4th grade student was able to ace (perfect score) a timed, 50-problem multiplication test in under three minutes (actually with 20-25 seconds to spare). I also use it to keep up my basic math skills. So you have a parent who is a true believer.

We don’t let our kids play with many electronic games, but this one is a great tool for my 12 and 10 year old to master basic math skills in a fun way. There are nights I find my daughter playing the game under the covers with a head lamp.

My 2nd grader has a corpus callosum defect in his brain which makes it difficult for him to grasp abstract concepts. Repetition tends to work really well for him, but even after using flashcards & worksheets (his handwriting is also sluggish), he was still struggling with basic addition & subtraction facts. I was researching some additional tools I could use to help him when I came across the FlashMaster. Within just a weekend of practicing with it, it was truly like a switch in his brain turned on. By the end of the week, his teacher sent me a message, asking what we had done differently with him! The results were so positive that the school’s resource teacher ordered one! We’ll certainly be glad to have it around when he starts multiplication & division in a couple of years!

In the past I’ve used a variety of methods to help my kids practice their basic math facts. They’ve drilled on paper with worksheets from “The Math Worksheet Site” or “Worksheet Works”; they’ve also drilled online at “Math-U-See” and “FactMonster”.

But this summer I found out about FlashMaster – and everything changed.

I bought one on Amazon using my Swagbucks, the kids started using it to do their math drills, and now we’re totally hooked! They can drill their math facts in a much more systematic way than the hit-and-miss method we were doing with the worksheets and online drills. Not only that, but practicing their drills is simply more fun for them now. Plus they’re learning their facts better than before, and of course that’s the most important part.

With the FlashMaster, the kids can practice specific tables or increase their difficulty one level at a time. Drills can be timed or not, and even the timed drills can be adjusted, lowering the time limits as they learn the facts better. They can also review their recently missed problems so they’re not always drilling facts they know already.

And what I like most is that they can practice their math drills in the car when we’re running errands. I’d have to say the FlashMaster has quickly become an indispensable part of our homeschool.

It is SUCH a great tool for learning and is truly how my children (starting at ages 4 and 6 with their cousins’ Flashmaster) fell in love with math.

My daughter has been struggling with math and she uses these in her classroom. We bought her one to practice at home. It works well and definitely meets all of our expectations.

Our kids look forward to practicing their math facts. It is a great educational toy. Keeps track of progress (percentage correct) which is motivational.

My child has already drastically improved in math after practicing almost daily for short periods of time. She goes at her own pace, and benefits greatly.

I bought this for my 9 year old stepdaughter (at the time) who was still using her fingers to add and subtract. It was driving me nuts, because I am a math teacher, and I’ve never had a successful algebra student who was still using their fingers. SO one summer, while she was with us, I blew $50 thinking well – it’s worth a shot. I bribed her with $1 on her prepaid phone for every level mastered at 100% in 90 seconds. We spent the summer with FlashMaster, she went back to 5th grade and pulled A’s in math the first semester, Bs the second. She’s still making B’s in math – Honors Pre Algebra.

FlashMaster makes practicing math fun for my children. It is straight out practice of math facts without the unnecessary bells and whistles of other products. Very durable. They enjoy using it. Highly recommended.

Bought this for my 9 year old son – he is in the 3rd grade. I was a bit nervous because I didn’t know if he would like it or not. He does like it and uses it a lot. He likes to challenge himself and check his scores. The added benefit of this “toy” is that it resembles a hand-held video game, so he doesn’t feel that it is too babyish or to “educational”.

The whole family is having fun exercising their brain and going to new levels with the FlashMaster. My 12, 9 and twin 6 year olds are using it every day to improve their math skills and get the basics down. It is a serious toy that challenges you and you don’t have to worry about all the extras because there are none! Kids love to learn and you don’t always have to get them something cute or pink or full of characters and such to have them get caught up in learning . Kids love to learn more than some adults so be confident when you choose this learning tool and treat it as a valuable tool and share it with your friends (not literally) so they will purchase their own. I have been asked to lend it out, but I will not … we hate to be without it!

We received our FlashMaster this week and we think it is a terrific product. Unlike other educational devices on the market it is obvious that the creator/s spent many hours perfecting each detail, instruction and buttons. My 8-year-old son figured out how to use it within 5 minutes and was proud to teach me how to use it (I read the manual to make sure we didn’t miss anything.). My kids actually fight over the Flashmaster and told me I need to buy another one so they can each have their own. We are a homeschooling family, but I feel that all children in all types of learning environments could benefit from this device. Thanks for a great product and for the obvious thoughtfulness that went into this product.

I love this math tool. My daughter works at a tutoring franchise and recommended it to me. It’s awesome for my 4th grader. He picks it up all the time for practice.

My seven year old son figured this out very quickly! Definitely read the manual to understand all of the options for the FlashMaster – great for homeschooling!

We have both. The children always choose FlashMaster over Math Shark.

We have a hard time focusing on math facts in our house. Practicing addition, subtraction & multiplication tables tends to get forgotten …. And then we get a bad grade on a test because we never memorized 7 x 9 ….

Then we found FlashMaster …. Imagine a DS-sized handheld for practicing math facts. It can go anywhere and believe it or not, the kids actually like it …!

One nice feature for parents is that you can review the results of your child’s last 9 sets of problems (ie: 15 correct out of 15 attempted on level 7 – 100% correct). My first and fourth graders love it!

I can’t say that I’ve seen anything like it. My 8 year-old daughter’s godmother purchased it as a gift and she [my daughter] essentially plays it as though it’s a handheld game …. It virtually travels with us.

The FlashMaster has been great for my 7-year-old with learning his addition and subtraction facts. It’s easy to set up and fun to use. He tries to beat his previous scores and times. Very good math tool!

I have used this little gem for three of my children so far and I love it. It is so portable, the battery lasts years (even with daily use) and its “instant” on feature lets them practice at a moments notice without having an electronic “warm-up” period. I like that it is a “no-frills” type of product, and simple to use ….

My now seventh-grader mastered math facts pretty quckly (after struggling for a long time) using the FlashMaster.

Great product for reviewing basic math facts for children or adults. Don’t let the busy screen fool you it is super easy to use!

I purchased this electronic device as I do not have time after school to do flash cards. This device allows my child to practice math independently and is more fun than flash cards. The price is higher than other devices, but we will be able to use it for many years, as it includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. When we are finished, I am sure cousins will be able to use it! … The teacher liked it so well that she ordered two more for her second grade class! Wonderful product! Math scores have improved as well!!!

FlashMaster is definitely my favorite gadget for helping my kids practice their math facts … a great gadget for on-the-go homeschoolers – just keep it in the car for a little “carschooling” fun!

Really good product; worked fast & worked well. My daughter’s grade in “mad minute” (30 additions in 1 min.) went from 47% to 90% in 2 weeks! I’m happy and she is over the moon with pride! Only wish we’d had it earlier.

I bought the FlashMaster for my granddaughter. She went from getting 12 multiplication facts correct on her Mad Minutes to getting 22 correct in two weeks of practice. This product helps enormously with being able to retrieve math facts quickly. And she loves it!

Great tool for practicing math facts!

This has been the most amazing educational product I’ve purchased. I have a 6 year old who has memorized half of his multiplication tables in 2 weeks. Even better, I don’t have to sit with him and “do flashcards,” and he wants to use this product, so there is no struggling to keep his attention. The only down fall for us is with three more kids to homeschool, one may not be enough.
